Welcome to the Public Rights of Way homepage!
Do you enjoy getting out into the countryside? Would you like to learn more about where you can go in Essex? Public rights of way can help you with all of these.
There are over 6,100 kilometres (3,800 miles) of public rights of way (footpaths, bridleways and byways) in Essex. They provide the opportunity to explore some of the finest landscape and heritage in the county; from the coast and Constable Country to forests and farmland, the Essex countryside is incredibly diverse.
This homepage will help you with how to make the most of Essex with walks and rides available to download or buy; information on the Definitive map, the Local Access Forum and the Rights of Way Improvement Plan as well as how to become involved with volunteering on rights of way with the Community Action Team..
If you need to report a problem then use our online reporting system or go to General Information for contact numbers.
If you would like to meet the Public Rights of Way team, we will have a stand in the Essex County Council tent at the following summer shows:
4th and 5th July Basildon Festival
11th July Tendring Show
12th and 13th September Barleylands Country Show
