Waste and recycling - Frequently asked questions

Question: What do I do with asbestos?

Answer: Recycling Centres for Household Waste cannot accept asbestos of any description. However, as part of Essex County Council's Household Hazardous Waste Scheme residents can request for small amounts (up to 40kg.) of Bonded Cement Asbestos Products to be collected and safely disposed of from their own domestic residence free of charge once in any Council Tax year.

For example, one small asbestos water tank or one 2.4 x 1.2 metres (8 x 4 feet) sheet will be collected free of charge. Any more than this can be collected by the Council's contractor at the same time but there will be a charge, which will be advised, to be paid prior to collection. To arrange a collection, call the Waste and Recycling Helpline on 0845 603 7625.

Alternatively residents can dispose of larger amounts through a private company. Details of companies are available from the A-Z guide on waste under Asbestos, the Health and Safety Executive on 01245 706200, the Waste and Recycling Helpline 0845 603 7625, or staff at Recycling Centres.
