Deafblindness is a condition combining a degree of auditory and visual impairment resulting in problems with communication, accessing information and mobility.

There are nearly 700 deafblind people known to Essex Social Care and over 470 of these are over 80 years old.
Faye Gatenby was appointed as the Development Worker for deafblind people in Essex in 1999 as part of a three year project between Essex Social Care and two registered charities, Deafblind UK and Sense. Since this project finished Deafblind UK and Essex Social Care agreed to extend the contract.
The aim of Community Care services is to promote independent living by empowering certain groups of people over 18 years of age to control their own lives as far as possible and have the freedom to participate fully in the community.
