Workshops and talks

Our activities change from month to month, but there are a number of regular events at the Essex Record Office in Chelmsford to help you get the most from our facilities and collections. Some of these are free, but almost all need to be booked in advance. Our programme can be downloaded by clicking on the icon to the right.

Introductory Searchroom tour
This free tour is ideal if you are just beginning your research, or you want to move beyond using microfiche and microfilm and start to explore other Searchroom resources.

Family and house history sessions
If you are inspired to to start to research the history of your house or family, then why not begin with one of our workshop sessions or short courses? Booking is essential and there is a small charge for joining these short courses and workshops. Telephone 01245 244620 for details.

The Essex History Group
The Essex History Group meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 10.30am in the Essex Record Office, Chelmsford. It offers a varied programme of free daytime lectures on heritage subjects. Despite the name, everyone, whatever their age, is welcome. Call 01245 244661 or contact the Heritage Education Unit for more information.

Historic Walks
Each year we research, write and lead a number of historic walks at locations around Essex. These usually take items from our collection as their theme. Recent walks have included Walking with Walker: Chelmsford from a Tudor map, Halstead: the Historic View & Medieval Waltham Abbey. These walks always prove popular and must be booked in advance.
