The library for children

In our libraries you can read stories, find out about the world, use computers, send emails and surf the internet. Even babies and toddlers can enjoy books with their parents through the Bookstart scheme.Lots of libraries have special events for children as well!

Information books are about all sorts of interesting facts, local and world wide news or events, and can help with school projects. Some tell you more about hobbies and interests.

We have story books for everyone from adventure to fantasy, science fiction to animal stories. There are pop-up books, Braille, large print books, audio books and more. In the summer holidays you can join in theSummer Reading Challenge, for free.

On our computers you can surf the Net for fun or use it to help with homework. You can look at our library catalogue to find out what the library has or ask for books or other things you would like.

Essex Libraries and the Youth Service run Information Points for Young People in Brentwood, Chelmsford, Harlow, Rayleigh and Witham libraries. They cover many topics including health, money, careers and entertainment, offer the Internet, books, leaflets and magazines.

At babies' 8 month hearing test, parents are given a free bag of books, rhyme cards and library information. Bookstart Baby and Toddler sessions allow books to be shared, parents and carers to meet each other and show what libraries have to offer.
