Public Rights of Way are recorded on a legal document known as the Definitive Map. This map gives conclusive evidence in law that a Public Right of Way exists. The Definitive Map is accompanied by a Statement which is a written description of the route.
Once a PROW has come into existence it cannot be moved ('diverted') or closed ('extinguished') except by a legal order. The Definitive Map for the county of Essex can be viewed at the County Council, at any time during office hours, but it is advisable to make an appointment in advance (tel: 01245 437563). Alternatively borough/district councils and parish councils hold copies of the Definitive Map and Statement for their area which can be viewed at local offices.
For further information phone the Public Rights of Way Department on 01245 437563 (For general walking purposes an Ordnance Survey Map is ideal and can be purchased at bookshops and stationers).
