Even with current levels of recycling we are producing large amounts of household waste in Essex. At the moment, approximately 60% of our waste still ends up in landfill sites. Continuing to rely on landfill to bury our waste is not a sustainable option for the future because untreated waste buried in landfill releases harmful gases into the air which contribute towards global warming, and the cost of disposing of waste in landfill is increasing each year.
